Checkpoint Charlie, Warp Spiders, and More
A few things to update at the end of the month. We recently got a major snow/sleet storm here in the Mid Atlantic - weirdest winter storm I have ever seen to be honest. The ice is so thick I can walk on top of it without breaking through to the snow beneath and I am not a small dude. Fortunately we did not lose power so hobby continued unabated.
I treated myself last week to a box of the new plastic Warp Spiders. While I have some of the original metal models in my collection they are uh…dated. What a classic model but yeah - that single pose and hunched over figure looks old even when compared to the other metal aspects!

I’m quite happy with how they turned out. Assembly was a bit fiddly however. I’ve been getting the desire to play more Warhammer lately - probably a result of reading some black library novels. Perhaps I’ll return to some SoloHammer using 3rd or 4th edition. Or maybe when 11th edition inevitably comes out this summer I’ll try to re-integrate with the local community for it. Whatever happens, I’m definitely buying this box when it comes out - those new Corsair models are absolutely lovely and extremely nostalgic for someone who always stared longingly at the old FW resin ones but could never afford them. GW announced a Warhammer World will be opening relatively close to me in 2027 and I am VERY much looking forward to attending narrative events!
Next up I ran an event at my local hobby store the day before the storm. Ran a game of Checkpoint Charlie playing the Hasty Attack scenario (always one of my favorites) with the Soviets against the Americans. The Soviets stormed forward very aggressively and aided by some impressive dice rolling completely smashed the American defenses, though the rout of a T-62 company on one flank nearly turned things around. A fun game and a cool era - definitely looking forward to Battlefront expanding it more and rolling out new nations as the period is very diverse. I’m very happy with my board setup, the whole thing travels nicely in a single tote and looks quite nice on the tabletop. The only thing I want to add is a bridge and a couple ford markers so I can add in my river.

The M103s popped an ambush, destroyed a single IS-3, and were promptly obliterated with uncannily accurate fire from T-62s. The armor on these guys is good but not great (Conqueror is a very similar tank and has much beefier armor).

IS-3s storming the fields! They barely did any damage to the American M48s however their thick armor bounced quite a few shots.

I quite liked how the explosion markers turned out - very easy to make and the flickering fire looks absolutely fantastic.
Finally I bought a Bambu Labs A1 combo printer. I want to use it to print terrain - I’ve never had good luck with FDM but I’ve heard this is the easiest to use printer out there (similar to my Saturn - as close to “plug and play” as you get). Oh! I finished painting all but one of my Great War Russians in 28mm last night. I saved one figure to do as a tutorial. I’ll hopefully get that done over the weekend and have it up ASAP (I am quite pleased with how they turned out)
