I managed to make it out to play a re-learning game of ADLG last Friday with my mate Paul. I call it “re-learning” because I played a decent amount of the last edition but only played v4 once. I forgot how fun and easy of a system it is - very easy to pick back up with minimal fuss.

We played Patrician Romans VS Patrician Romans. It was a cool matchup as his list was more “eastern” themed with heavy cav bow and mine had a distinctly “western” flair (lots of impetuous foederatii both on foot and on horses)

This isn’t a blow by blow batrep per se, just a quick summary of the game and a photo dump. Terrain ended up being mostly on his side of the board. I had heavy artillery and flank marched a LH corps (so cool that v4 gives +1 to the roll for flank marching LH corps by the way, may be my favorite change). I deployed my infantry line in the center and my cav corps just to their right, counting on my flank march to show up and let my cav roflstomp that flank in the ensuing chaos.

He lined up his barbarian cav on my left, his legionaries opposite mine, and his heavy cav corps across from my own.

His barbarian cav wheeled around going for my camp and my flank, so I spun off my foederatii infantry to meet them - a bloody fight ensued which cost us both elements but I got the worst of it eventually.

The legionaries ground into each other in the middle without much decision, HI on HI really is a slugfest. My artillery accomplished nothing while just as his LH broke into my rear (sacking my lazily unfortified camp, seriously who has time to fortify camps these days…)

My flank march arrived and sent his heavy cav bow reeling before they could really square off against my own HC.

We had to call the game here with things very much in the balance, I had lost more elements than he did but the flank march was incredibly disruptive and caused a big swing, I think I’d have gotten the worse of it in the end but it was a near run thing.

Thanks to Paul for re-teaching me the game! I’m tremendously tempted to do another army in a different period, Delhi Sultanate looks particularly appetizing from a gameplay and modeling standpoint… then again I do also like LH and Huns are a great “matched pair” opponent to my army…hmmmmmm
